STEP
2: Choose the type of fuel you prefer
WOOD

A
properly engineered wood burning system is
by far a more eco-friendly source of heat
than gas, oil, or electricity from non-renewable
sources. Like all renewable energies though,
attention to every aspect of the process is
necessary – from the origin of the fuel
to its final release as gas and smoke. The
firewood must be seasoned, which means exposing
split and stacked wood to a summer’s
worth of open air and sun. For all this effort
to pay off, you need an advanced combustion
stove or fireplace. These appliances burn
wood much more efficiently than almost anything
made before the mid-eighties. These new appliances
use about 1/3rd less wood and produce 90%
less smoke to produce the same heat than earlier
models. They actually re-burn the smoke, which
produces more heat and eliminates the build-up
of creosote.

GAS

Of
all the nonrenewable fossil fuels (Gas, Oil,
Coal), Natural Gas is the cleanest burning.
Since there is limited amount of natural gas
on Earth, it should be used efficiently to
leave some for future generations. As technology
develops ever more realistic-looking gas fires
and flames, many people are choosing the convenience
of gas stoves and fireplaces. The types of
gas products include: Freestanding stoves,
Fireplace Inserts, Gas Logs, and New Construction
Fireplaces. All of these require less service
than any other hearth products and should
last for many years. A recent study on the
comparative fuel costs between wood and gas,
showed wood at $5.00 per million BTU’s
vs. $ 8.00 for gas.
